Reiki Books (prior to 1997)

This is an annotated bibliography listing of the majority of English Language Reiki Books
(and a few others) Version 6.2 (mostly chronological) by:
Walter Keoki Quan
Victoria, British Columbia (Canada) "A large part of my Reiki practise is spent accumulating books in English on Reiki. This is a listing of books I have found and/or purchased or have seen in passing. Missing, so far as I can tell are books from Australia (where I now have a source) or other English-speaking but non-North American countries, and self-published books which are not widely available. As well as publication data, "Notes" consist of my opinions (generally) - I encourage people to read the books for themselves to see if the information therein "rings" for them. Please send any corrections to me - additions to the list welcome, but it means I'll be behind again! Thanks to Richard Rivard for hosting this listing on this site. " Walter Quan   (all comments are Walter's except RR - Richard Rivard).

The Reiki Factor  Ray, Barbara Radiance Associates pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-933267-00-2
First Edition 1983, Second Edition 1985 Subsequent editions to 1992
Notes: Subsequent editions have been issued as The "Reiki" Factor in the Radiance Technique (Expanded Edition). Original editions contained a fairly balanced perspective on Reiki and the author's experiences with the energy. More recent editions spend a great deal of energy asserting that "Reiki" is not correct or proper unless it is practised (and initiated) as the "Radiance Technique®".
The Official Reiki Handbook -A Complete Reference Manual for Students of Reiki Ray, Barbara and Carrington, Yesnie American-International Reiki Association, Inc. 74 pp, Cerlox-bound, 1/4" spine  0-01-001175-7
1982, Third edition revised 1984
Notes: As with the first author's other book, subsequent editions state very strongly the position that Reiki isn't Reiki unless taught in the authors' methodology. Early editions of these books give excellent hand positions, as well as an A-Z listing of Specific Treatments.

first edition 1992
third edition 2000
Notes: A manual (second degree) for students of Reiki Plus - David Jarrell's format of Reiki. Includes a great deal of information - mostly specific to his format. Subsequent editions seen in bookstores.

3rd Edition Notes: Twice revised from the original volume published in 1992, this volume describes second degree material from the Jarrells’ Reiki Plus ® modality.  Specific to the book and this modality is Psycho-Theraputic Reiki Plus which addresses healing at the soul level.  Also really neat is a section which outlines various conditions and a whole range of approaches to healing including specific Reiki treatment areas in addition to suggestions around avenues through nutrition, herbs, vitamins, minerals, medical referents, environmental changes, chakra connections and “probable esoteric psychological relationships”.

Reiki Universal Life Energy Baginski, Bodo & Sharamon, Shalia LifeRhythm, Mendocino,CA  211 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-940795-02-7
1988 (English version), 1985 as Reiki-Universale Lebensenergie in November subsequent editions as well
Notes: A thorough introduction to Reiki and the practice - First English edition was issued with pages cut out when Reiki Masters objected to their being listed in the book. Heartfelt and thorough. Still one of the earliest complete manuals and a good one!
.

Notes: two books, subsequently published as one volume (8.5 x 11 inches), containing this Reiki Master's approach to Reiki and to having a practice (including professional behaviours for private sessions, Reiki practicums, group healing work, class etiquette and professional etiquette.) Some information is rather prescriptive. Some information comes from American Reiki Masters' Association - first mention of a fee structure other than the `traditional'.

The Complete Reiki Handbook Lübeck, Walter Lotus Light - Shangri-la series - Twin Lakes, WI 192 pp 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-941524-87-6

Notes: The first (to my knowledge) Canadian book about Reiki. (Discusses the "Association Canadienne et Quebecoise des Maitres Reiki" (Canadian and Quebec Reiki Masters Association), traces lineage through seven generations. A general guide to Reiki - but in French!
Reiki a Torch in Daylight: a Guide for Healing. Mitchell, Karyn, Ph.D.  Mind Rivers Publications, Daysville, Oregon  154 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 inches 0-9640822-1-7
1994
Notes: A comprehensive manual of Reiki from Reiki I Path Empowerment to Reiki Master Teacher Path Empowermentcuss (from a student's point of view) what to expect in an initiation.
Reiki and Other Rays of Touch Healing Milner, Kathleen self, Arizona 152 pp, 8.5 x 11 inches 1-886903-97-2
1994
Notes: One of the new versions of `radical' Reiki books. Includes traditional symbols in print, as well as a number of additional symbols. One of Milner's premises is that Reiki was not given to Mrs. Takata as an intact system, and that Reiki only represents one of the elemental Rays. (earth, I think) - Her information comes from a variety of sources, but she credits Sai Baba with a great deal of the materials. Can't say that the materials resonate for me...
Reiki and Beyond - Healing Manual Gunn, S.Jeanne Merrit Press - Virginia Beach, Virginia 155 pp, 8.5 x 11 inches, cerlox-bound 0-9643412-0-4
1994
Notes: "This Manual consists of: Reiki I, Reiki II, Quantum Reiki, and Beyond". A manual which combines information about Reiki with accounts (in poetry and prose) of people's experiences with the Energy. The Author appears to run the "Reiki and Beyond Training Center", and would seem to offer a modified curriculum in the William Rand style of levels.
.

A Complete Book of Reiki Healing Müller, Brigitte and Günther, Horst H. Life Rhythm - Mendocino, CA 192 pp 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-940795-16-7
1995 (originally published in German - also published in French)
Notes: What originally attracted me to this book (in French as Reiki Guérisf the book) was the photograph (near the end of the book) of Takata's resting place in Hilo, Hawaii. The book contains a comprehensive look at Reiki - details hand positions and suggested treatments in conjunction with these positions. The two Reiki Master/Authors provide information about their paths and how they've come to Reiki.
Reiki for First Aid Lübeck, Walter Lotus Light - Shangri-la series - Twin Lakes, WI 160 pp 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-914955-26-8BR>1995 (English edition), 1990 German

Reiki and Medicine Eos, Nancy, M.D., Reiki Master Nancy Eos, M.D., Grass Lake, MI 100 pp, 8.5 x 7 inches 0-9644923-0-x?
1995
Notes: Dr. Eos outlines her experiences with quite a number of cases where she has incorporated Reiki while working in the Emergency Room. The examples are extremely well-documented and are varied in nature and extremity. Notes in the margins help to exemplify Reiki "in action" in each case study.
Essential Reiki - A Complete guide to an Ancient Healing art Stein, Diane The Crossing Press Inc, Freedom, CA 156 pp, 8.5 x 10 inches 0-89594-736-6
1995
Notes: Perhaps the most controversial book published on Reiki - contains a complete course (including handouts for students) of Reiki - all levels, as well as symbols, and instructions about initiating. To her credit, the author explains that attunements should be passed by a Reiki Master, but also gives her experiences of receiving attunements and devising attunements without requisite personal initiations. (Some male readers also find female-only referents controversial). Instructional video series also seen at bookstores.
The Radiance Technique® and AIDS Ault, Van R. Resources for Renewal, San Francisco 134 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-9635155-3-5
1995
Notes: Outlines many personal stories of treating and initiating people with HIV/AIDS, and the effects of Radiant TouchSM on HIV/AIDS. As is customary with TRT books, there are a number of annoying references to TRT not being `Reiki', but the stories and examples can serve for those who practice Reiki and for those who have HIV/AIDS.

1996
Notes: Lübeck's newest book - it has a lot of information about Reiki as a path of learning and empowerment. The other part of the subtitle is "A wonderful method for inner development and holistic healing." He discusses a number of issues in Reiki for each level, and discusses 'other' forms of Reiki.
Way to the Light: Pilgrimage of a Reiki Master Verschure, Yasmin Samuel Weiser Inc, York Beach, Maine 258ppm 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-877288-77-1
1996
Notes: An autobiographical book divided into four sections: 1) an initial biography; 2) Reiki; 3) a section on Death and Dying (specifically around her experience with a person with AIDS); and 4) Travels with a Reiki Master. A book that deals with one person's experiences and stories - personally-based - might have been edited with a firmer hand.
All of Reiki - Book I Kuboi, Harry M. Hawaii Reiki Center 94 pp, 5.5 x 8.5 inches 0-965160-60-2
1995, 1996
Notes: Harry M. Kuboi is one of Takata's 22 Masters. In this first of (at least) three books, he channels Dr. Usui (who declares Kuboi to be his 'twin soul'), and also Jesus. Early histories and philosophies of Reiki are explained.

Introduces work in "Trans- Reiki(" "a full body Reiki treatment with meditation and visualization techniques for deeper emotional-spiritual healing. Sections on treating vertically, as well as treating PWAs.

Reiki: The Energy of Life in the Spirit of Love White, Dorothy Self - Brisbane, Australia 142 pp, 6 x 8 inches  0 646 14130 9
