Since 1998, copies of the original Reiki society booklet - "Reiki Ryoho Hikkei" (also known as the "Usui Reiki Hikkei") - have been given to some Reiki masters in the west. In 1999, I received a copy from a Vancouver master student who had been gifted it by her student, Akihiko Uechi.  I learned that around that time the booklet was also being sold on the internet for $300.  The booklet is not very large - about 64 pages - but it contains a section on questions and answers (seemingly from an interview) and other sections on hand positions (from Dr. Hayashi's original version of his Healing Guide), the Gainen (Usui principles), and some Waka poetry(from the Meiji emperor). The booklet breakdown is as follows:
  1. Page 1. The Five Principles.
  2. Page 2-22. Usui's own Questions & Answers (which appear to be from an interview)
  3. Page 23-42.   Handpositions for different ailments (created by Dr. Hayashi)
  4. Page 43+. 120  Gyosei -  Meiji Poetry (often ercited or sung in meditations for inspiration)
There is another booklet used by the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (the original Reiki society) called "Reiki Ryoho no Shiori." It contains many healing techniques, but it is now only given out to the high ranking society members. According to Hiroshi Doi (a Gakkai member)  it is no longer part of the Gakkai teachings.  Thus it was allowed to be presented to the West in 1999 by Doi-sensei in a series of workshops that came to be called Usui Reiki Ryoho International

You can also view the techniques taught at my Sample Shoden and Sample Okuden pages.

At the beginning of Reiki Ryoho Hikkei section for Questions and Answers, there is this following message from Usui Sensei.  He is sharing his thoughts on what he called "Usui Reiki Ryoho."  This is the set of concepts he taught in each of his classes (according to his last surviving student, Tenon-in).  The complete concepts (as originally presented on the kakejiku (wall hanging) found in the Usui dojo)  may be found explained in detail at The Usui Gainen web page  (as given by Tenon-in to Dave King and Melissa Riggall.)  Note that contrary to many Reiki teachings, these concepts do not deal with hand healing methods.  They are essentially a set of mindfulness concepts.

Explanation Of Instruction For The Public

By the Founder, Mikao Usui

"It is an old custom to teach a method to only my descendants for keeping a wealth within the family. However with the modern society we live in, we wish to share the happiness of co-existence and co-prosperity. So I do not allow my family to keep this (Usui Reiki Ryoho) method to ourselves.

"My Usui Reiki Ryoho is original, there is nothing like this in the world. So I would like to release this method to the public for everyone's benefit and I hope for everyone's happiness. My Reiki Ryoho is an original method based on the intuitive power in the universe. By this power, the body gets healthy and enhances one's happiness of life and peace of mind.

"Nowadays people need improvement and reconstruction inside and outside of life, so the reason for releasing my method to the public is to help people with illness of body and mind."
